About Malcolm Hartwell

I am an English literature graduate, a Master Mariner and senior legal professional admitted as a lawyer in England and South Africa with more than 35 years' experience working with complex written material.

Malcolm Hartwell

Throughout my career, I have analysed, drafted and edited documents that require accuracy, logical structure and careful attention to detail. My work involves explaining technical and specialised subjects clearly to readers who may not share the writer's expertise. My ten years at sea means I have a strong grasp of technical, mechanical and mathematical concepts.

These skills transfer naturally to editing.

I help authors communicate their ideas clearly, effectively and professionally while preserving their own voice and style.

Professional background

My professional experience extends beyond law and editing.

Before entering the legal profession, I spent 10 years serving on cargo ships and qualified as a Master Mariner. Working at sea required technical knowledge, practical problem-solving, operational decision-making and the ability to understand complex systems.

That experience continues to influence the way I approach editing. It enables me to engage comfortably with technical, commercial and analytical material and to understand the context in which many specialised documents are written.

As a result, I am often particularly well placed to assist authors working in areas that combine technical expertise with complex written communication.

My approach

Good editing should improve a document without changing the author's identity.

I do not impose my own style on a manuscript. Instead, I focus on:

•  clarity;

•  structure;

•  consistency;

•  readability; and

•  accuracy of expression.

Every project is different. A doctoral thesis requires a different approach to a journal article or a business report. My objective is always to make the document easier for its intended audience to understand.

Helping international authors communicate clearly

Many capable researchers, professionals and organisations produce excellent work in English even though it is not their first language.

Often the challenge is not the quality of the ideas but expressing them in a way that reads naturally and confidently to an English-speaking audience.

I help authors:

•  improve clarity and readability;

•  avoid awkward or overly literal phrasing;

•  strengthen flow and coherence;

•  use professional and academic English confidently; and

•  preserve their intended meaning and voice.

My aim is not to make every document sound the same. It is to ensure that readers focus on the substance of the work rather than being distracted by language issues.

This service is particularly valuable for international postgraduate students, researchers, academics, consultants and businesses preparing documents for submission, publication or distribution in English.

Working with authors

Many clients know their subject extremely well but need assistance presenting their ideas as clearly as possible.

Others are writing in English as an additional language and want confidence that their work reads naturally and professionally.

I work with:

•  postgraduate students;

•  academic researchers;

•  professional authors;

•  consultants;

•  businesses; and

•  independent specialists.

I respect academic integrity and professional ethics at all times. My role is to improve communication, not to create content on behalf of the author.

How the editing process works

Send me your document

Please provide:

•  the document type;

•  its subject;

•  the approximate word count;

•  the level of editing required;

•  any submission requirements; and

•  your preferred completion date.

Receive a quotation

I assess the condition and complexity of the document before providing a quotation.

A manuscript requiring substantial structural editing involves more work than one requiring a final language review. Quotations therefore reflect the nature of the project rather than a standard rate.

Review the edited document

I normally edit in Microsoft Word using tracked changes and comments.

You remain in control of your document and can review, accept or reject every suggested amendment.

Location

I am based in Durban, South Africa, and work remotely with clients throughout South Africa and internationally.
